Lucuma is an exotic Peruvian fruit and also known as egg fruit. The lucuma tree is drought-resistant and on average grows 25 to 50 feet tall and can live for up to 500 years and still remain productive. Native to Ecuador, Peru and Chile, this round or ovaloid fruit is yellowish-green with a bright yellow-orange fibrous flesh. Today its flavour as an ice cream is often favored over chocolate or vanilla in many countries (hard to believe eh?). Although it grows in other tropical and subtropical regions, GY LUCUMA grows in the Andean highlands of Peru and the fruit originating from this region is considered to be of superior flavour and nutritional value, and culturally revered. It has been honored spiritually and in the culinary fashion since ancient times. The Incas relied on lucuma fruit as a natural source of sugar, which is why it is often referred to as “Inca’s Gold”.
